In 2015, 2019 and 2020 large areas of Calderdale flooded following heavy rainfall. For the past 12 months the Environment Agency have been carrying out significant prevention works in several locations throughout Brighouse, including Wellholme Park and Whinney Hill.
After an update on progress on the project Josh joined Environment Agency staff and partners on a tour of work taking place behind hoardings in Wellholme Park, which will store and slow rainfall into the river Calder. The completed scheme will also offer attractive areas of natural landscaping and biodiversity as well as doubling as a floodplain when needed.
Josh said ‘Since my election last year I have been vocal in Parliament about the need to deliver flood prevention schemes throughout Calder Valley. Just 9 weeks ago we were once again centimetres from disaster and some areas did suffer localised flooding. I was delighted to tour the Wellholme site today to see the progress of works and learn more about how the site will look when it is returned to the community. This project isn’t just going to help prevent flooding, it will create a place for people to enjoy. I’ll continue to press at a national, regional and local level for this work to be prioritised.’

The project is due to be completed next spring, with further works also planned to protect Hebden Bridge and Elland.
